It was a moment of fond memories shared by family and close friends of the former First Lady, Theresa Aba Kufour.
The wife of former President John Agyekum Kufour died on October 1, she was 87 years.
A glowing tribute by her husband defined a woman whose advice saw one of the famous health policies which was to replace the infamous ‘cash-and-carry’ system in the country’s health sector. Perhaps, her health background contributed in some major transformation between 2001 and 2009.
At the Heroes Park in Kumasi, the affluents, middle and the low class from all spheres of the social cluster mourned with the man who led the ruling party to it’s first political victory.
Final funeral rites
Her final funeral rites perhaps defied the norm from the lenses of some traditionalist. However, it was not an affront because the people of Dumase in the Bono Region, where the late Theresa Kufour hails, owe allegiance to the golden stool. In that sense, the Asantehene can decide where to hold her funeral and her burial place.
She was buried at Daban, the hometown of her husband on Friday. And as a devout Catholic, it was her choice.
Donned in red shirt (Kobene), John Agyekum Kufour sat calmly under one of the raised daises and exchanged pleasantries. However, a vivid look on his face showed someone who has lost a dear one.
His brother, Dr Addo Kufour, former Defence Minister to his immediate left and two seats from his right hand sat the immediate former Minister of Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
Former Ghana’s high commissioner to the UK witnessed an historic moment when the late Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth invited John Agyekum Kufour to the Burkingham Palace after assuming office in 2001.

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor recalled a tribute by her husband “She influenced a number of policies, per her advice the National Health Insurance Scheme was born.”
President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, some Ministers of State, MPs and some players in the business community were all at the Heroes Park to pay their last respect and bid the former First Lady a farewell.
